A lower-dose, less-expensive, and potentially less-effective combination medication for relieving acid reflux may help protect the stomach lining from damage by esophagitis and prevent ulcers.
High-dosage, long-term use may be more effective than low-dose esophagitis prevention, according to new research from a group of researchers at the University of Vermont.
“By inhibiting acid production, the protective lining of the stomach lining allows acid to remain longer and to travel up the esophagus,” said lead author Dr. Feixiong Cheng, a gastroenterologist at the University of Vermont.
In the new study, Cheng conducted over-the-counter studies of two other proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) — Nexium and Prilosec. The combination medication is available in the form of pills that are placed under the tongue and swallowed.
A small study in mice with lupus found that taking omeprazole (Nexium) reduced the risk of developing ulcers caused by lupus flares, as well as ulcers associated with lupus-associated peptic ulcers.
A recent study published inArch Intern Medfound that omeprazole was more effective than omeprazole in relieving the symptoms of acid reflux, which included constipation, nausea, and diarrhea.
While the study was conducted by other scientists, Cheng said the results were preliminary and the findings would not be published until April 10.
A review of over-the-counter studies published infound that omeprazole was more effective than omeprazole in relieving the symptoms of acid reflux, as well as acid-related abdominal pain and bloating, compared with placebo, in reducing the risk of developing ulcers caused by ulcer flares.
“This study suggests that there may be several reasons why people may not be as effective as they think they are,” Cheng said.
The study, led by Dr. Janet McAllister, a gastroenterologist at Tufts University, involved patients with ulcers that caused a flare of acid reflux. The ulcers occurred at three times the rate of ulcers in the placebo group and four times the rate in the omeprazole group. “Our results suggest that there may be several reasons why people may not be as effective as they think they are,” McAllister said.
In the study, patients taking omeprazole were also asked to report their pain and their gastrointestinal symptoms, including constipation, nausea, and diarrhea, with a follow-up appointment later in the year. The results of the study were published in theAnnals of Internal Medicine.
Patients taking omeprazole also had to report how their heart was doing, and their symptoms, including abdominal pain and bloating, as well as their symptoms of heart problems such as chest pain and irregular heart rhythms.
“This is a good example of how patients who have ulcers can benefit from a combination of medications, including omeprazole, which may be effective in reducing symptoms and improving the quality of life for patients with ulcers,” Cheng said.
Zantac (Lopressor) was the only drug that Cheng and his team found to be more effective in reducing symptoms of acid reflux than omeprazole. In comparison, Zantac (Prevacid) was slightly more effective than omeprazole in reducing symptoms of acid reflux.
In the study, the researchers used the same questionnaire to compare the effectiveness of omeprazole and Zantac. They found that omeprazole was more effective in reducing symptoms of acid reflux than Zantac. In comparison, the effectiveness of omeprazole was significantly higher in patients who had ulcers associated with a flare of acid reflux than in patients who had ulcers associated with a flare of acid reflux.
Zantac (Lopressor) is approved to treat GERD, a condition that causes the narrowing of the esophagus, stomach, and lower esophageal sphincter (LES). GERD is caused by acid from food. GERD occurs when a small amount of acid in the stomach escapes into the esophagus, causing stomach contents to break down.
